With sweeps of dramatic coastline, rolling hills, and historical, quintessential architecture, Bridlington is one of Yorkshire’s must-visit holiday destinations.
Bridlington is also home to vast amounts of wildlife, in particular birds. The RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs is just one of the areas you can make use of your binoculars and try to spot the half a million seabirds soaring overhead. And from April to August every year, you can see puffins!
Here are some of the best ways to spot puffins on your next Bridlington holiday:
Bempton Cliffs viewing platforms
The RSPB’s six seabird viewing platforms are the perfect way to observe the puffins nesting in the cliffs, without being intrusive.
4,000 pairs of puffins return to the cliffs each year to breed. If you want to see the baby puffins, make sure you visit between May and early July. The adults regularly bring their chicks fish plucked straight from the North Sea.
With nearby parking and wheelchair access, the platforms are one of the best ways for the whole family to enjoy these delightful birds.
Take an RSPB Puffin Patrol, a guided walk along the clifftop coastal path designed especially to help you spot Bempton Cliff’s puffins.
After the guided tour, continue your walk down the coastal path to Flamborough Cliffs, another prime puffin spotting location.
The Yorkshire Belle sets sail from Bridlington Harbour and offers a three-hour bird spotting cruise. The cruise is officially partnered with the RSPB, so you can get as close to the puffins as possible without disturbing them.
You can spot the puffins perching on the cliffs of Bempton and Flamborough, and bobbing in the sea around the boat. But if you’re struggling, experienced guides will always be on hand to help you, as well as provide expert knowledge.
The Bridlington Holiday Cottages are just a ten-minute drive from Bridlington Harbour and a 21-minute drive from the RSPB at Bempton Cliffs. So book your next holiday at the holiday cottages at Bridlington early to ensure you can visit during the peak puffin-spotting months of the year.
