This year the famous Royal Yorkshire Regatta sets sail for a week of events both onshore and afloat from the 3rd to the 10th of August. Situated just a 10-minute drive from the harbour, Bridlington Holiday Cottages are a great base from which to enjoy the event.

Bridlington bay is widely regarded as the best on the whole of the east coast for sailboat racing. Visitors and sailing enthusiasts alike flock to the East Yorkshire resort for seven days of action upon the water as well as activities and events ashore.

A royal regatta

Not many people realise that Bridlington is home to a famous royal sailing club which is steeped in history. Situated atop the western end of the harbour, the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club was established in 1847. The club’s patronage began with Queen Victoria and continues with the Duke of Edinburgh who visited in 1997 to mark the association’s 150th anniversary.

The 2019 Bridlington Regatta is the 162nd staging of the event. Few sailing clubs can boast a week-long regatta these days with most taking place over a long weekend. For yachting aficionados, the regatta features racing from Cruisers and Squibs as well as the famous Yorkshire One Design (YOD). The YOD was launched in 1898 and was designed to enable local sailors to race a small boat built for low cost on a level playing field. It remains one of the oldest classes in the country still to be competing regularly.

An east coast gem

Bridlington Regatta is a true spectacle for sailing enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. Bridlington is a traditional maritime port which dates back to the 12th Century. Bridlington boasts two fabulous sandy beaches and all that you would wish from a traditional British seaside resort.

As a holiday town, Bridlington is a great place for a summer holiday or short break. There are affordable camping and caravan sites aplenty as well as a range of bed and breakfast and hotel offerings. Holiday cottages in Bridlington are a great option from which to base a break exploring the beautiful Yorkshire coast. Bridlington is easily accessible from the M62 and can be reached from the southeast in around five hours.
